Nettie Conley

Nettie Alaine Sawyer Conley, 93, of Houston, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield after a long illness.

She was born Jan. 3, 1922, in Raymondville, daughter of James Franklin and America Alice Barton Sawyer. She married Bluford “Bub” Conley. He passed away in 1959.

She attended school in the Big Creek area until she went to work to help support her family. She was baptized at Big Creek in the 1950s by Rado Wilson.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, canning, rock hunting, growing flowers and sewing. Her greatest love was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She suffered from blindness later in life, but she was able to do crafts by touch or feel. She made many braided rugs for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bluford; an infant son, Bluford Conley, Jr.; three sisters, Cleta Wells, Lavada Stagner and Evelyn Sawyer; and two brothers, Johnny and Audrey “Bud” Sawyer.

Survivors include her three children, Ella Daniel of Houston, Otie Conley of Springfield and Vada Martin of Cabool; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sylvia Goucher of Independence and Kathleen Sawyer of Houston; a brother, Samuel Sawyer of Raymondville; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were Tuesday, March 3 at Evans Funeral Home with Dr. Howell Burkhead officiating. Burial was in Mahan Cemetery.
